Super Smash Bros. fans were just treated to a pretty meaty direct that showcased multiple character reveals, new game modes, as well as many stages, pieces of music, and much more. But Smash Ultimate is still about 4 months away, and there is obviously more that Sakurai needs to show when he teased that hidden mode. Maybe we will get another Smash Direct, or just a normal, generic direct where they talk about smash for a few minutes. Either way, it wouldn’t be a smash announcement without some character reveals. Even though Sakurai said not to expect too many fighters, I’m sure they still have a trick or two up their sleeves.
As far as I’m concerned, we as fans have already been spoiled by the gods of Smash Bros (it’s Sakurai, he’s the God), by every character coming back as well as all the stages. We getting 8 new characters as of right now, but there is still so much time left until the game is announced and I honestly feel like there may be another character or two still left unannounced. Does the game really need more characters to seem good enough to buy? Not really, but Sakurai is pulling everything out of his hat for this one. Apparently, the roster for this game was finalized at the end of 2015, right after the ballot for who people wanted to be in Smash. If you have been anywhere on the internet you have seen people talking about characters they want in this game, and man… some people have incredibly unrealistic expectations.
Yes, I understand Goku would be cool in Smash, but he isn’t a video game character. You may love Ashley from WarioWare, but she’s an assist trophy and WarioWare isn’t that popular of a game, nor does it have much of an impact. And for God’s sake, how would Phoenix Wright even fight?! People have always speculated that Nintendo will take the obvious route and they have always surprised us by giving us what we didn’t even know we wanted. But here, with Smash, they’re making the obvious, fan-pleasing choices. With that being said, here are the characters I think have a chance of still getting in Smash.
Skull Kid
Of course, as soon as the Direct was finished, fans started to dissect every moment of it. Some fans noticed the two chairs in the background of the room that Sakurai was sitting in. Because of the people chair, fans thought this meant Waluigi was being hinted at as the next fighter. But as the dust settled, fans realized that the colors of the chairs, and even the other couch in the room, have the same colors of Skull Kid. Now, of course, this sounds ridiculous and like a far leap of knowledge, but as Andre from GameXplain has pointed out, in Greninja’s revealed trailer there was a cloud in the background that was shaped like Pacman. The next character to be revealed was indeed, Pacman, so maybe it’s not so crazy after all.
The evidence doesn’t stop there though folks. Certain other popular characters like Waluigi and Ashley have already been confirmed to not be in Smash due to their popularity but Skull Kid has not. A very reliable leaker by the name of laz18, who correctly predicted the E3 Smash video and the recent direct, has strongly implied the next fighter will be Skull Kid. 2015, when the roster was finalized was also the year Majora’s Mask 3D was released so it could have been on Sakurai’s mind when deciding the roster. The Moon from Majora’s Mask has also been revealed as an assist trophy, it would be odd to have two assist trophies from the exact same game and like I said before, Skull Kid has yet to be seen as an assist trophy. Most of the costumes for Mii characters from Smash 4 have been announced as characters (King K Rool, Chrom) and Skull Kid had his own costume. There’s quite a few reasons why Skull Kid would be the next one to make it into Smash Bros. Ultimate and I honestly think he has a good chance. Hell, even ZeRo thinks Skull Kid is next.
Issac
Golden Sun may be a franchise that hasn’t had a title in years, but that isn’t stopping the internet from screaming that they want him. But I really don’t blame them, Golden Sun is quite popular. I always see people saying that it deserves another sequel and as many know, Sakurai loves older franchises. He also tweeted a lovely picture of a Rathalos from Monster Hunter, standing over Link, Marth, and Shulk. As soon as he posted this, the Golden Sun fandom went crazy because it looks like a typical battle from the game. This does sound like a stretch but after seeing it myself, I kind of understand. Being a sword character also means Issac has a good chance of being in Smash since it’s pretty much a meme that the game is piled full of sword characters.
Twitter User @SeclusiveBlue has also posted a picture from “all internet polls” for Smash Ultimate that apparently puts Issac as the most requested character in the United States, and 9th in Japan. Although relevancy in Japan is obviously important, the US is a huge market and Ultimate has the potential to be the best selling Smash game ever. I believe Issac is most likely to be the next fighter for Smash due to his popularity, and he would be easy to make a move list for. We will have to wait and see.
Geno
This warrior from Star Road is a bit of an odd pick. Yes, he has been requested for years and is incredibly popular, but there are also a few reasons why he wouldn’t make it into Smash Ultimate.
Sakurai has already stated that he doesn’t want to stuff the game with Mario characters. There are already 8 Mario characters to date, plus 3 Donkey Kong characters which some consider Mario characters anyway. Adding another Mario character would seem excessive, plus I think Waluigi is a bit more popular at the moment.
However, Sakurai has said that he really like Geno and would love to put him in Smash. Whether he will or not is a complete guess, because there have been plenty of characters he has want to add before but hasn’t.
Though, like I mentioned before, Geno did get his own Mii costume in Smash 4, so maybe like other fighters who also got a Mii costume, he will become a fighter. If you have played Mario RPG, Geno uses a lot of beams, blasts and magical attacks, which could make him a lot like Mega Man. I’m sure there are countless Youtube videos talking about his potential move list.
I’m no psychic so I don’t know who really is going to get announced. These are just educated guesses, but as many of you know, Nintendo games are always very surprising and they never do what people expect. I still really hope Waluigi would get announced, but he is already an assist trophy. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any more clues or hints, and for all your Smash Bros news, keep it Savvy folks!
