Welcome to the second installment of Quest Log, a segment where we ask GameSavvy writers a butt-load of questions. Much like the Myspace surveys of the ancient times, these are meant to be fun and silly. So without further ado let’s get to know Nathan Hale.
Question 1: What’s your favourite game of all time?
I have several favorites that I like to turn back to, but if I had to pick only one then it would have to be Oblivion.
Question 2: What’s a game you thought you’d like but actually hated?
I’ll get a lot of flak for this, but I really didn’t like Shadow of the Colossus. The gameplay mechanics were just so awkward for me. I actually watched a friend beat the game in five hours in one sitting so I’m aware of how the story goes.
Question 3: What’s a really popular game everyone seems to love but you don’t like?
The Assassin Creed games. Every time I try to play it I just find myself pushing it to the side after 15 minutes.
Question 4: What’s a game you didn’t expect to enjoy but ended up liking?
NieR. The first time I watched my wife play it I wasn’t all that impressed, but when I played it through myself I got invested into the multiple endings and soundtrack.
Question 5: What game have you spent the most amount of hours on?
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for sure takes the cake on that. My wife actually hates it when I start over because I have the opening tutorial memorized word for word. Monster Hunter: World comes next.
Question 6: If you had to marry the last video game character you played, who would it be?
Sheena Fujibayashi from Tales of Symphonia. Do I really need to explain myself?
Question 7: If you had to live in the world of the last game you played, what world would it be?
Tethe’alla from Tales of Symphonia. The world is flourishing so I know resources would not be an issue, and magic is fun!
Question 8: Have you ever had a crush on a video game character?
Not that I can really recall. Though I’ll say every time I pick up Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim I always go and get Shahvee as my marriage partner.
Question 9: What was the first game you ever remember playing?
From memory that would be Kirby Pinball for the GameBoy though my dad has told me we use to play Mortal Kombat together on the Genesis often. He would always win but there was one instance where I somehow managed to get him locked into a corner and won.
Question 10: Have you ever pretended to be sick to get out of something so you could play a game?
Oh yes, plenty of times. In fact, I’ll be planning a week off in March when Animal Crossing: New Horizons come out so I can play and write an article about the game!
Question 11: What game did you last complete?
The last game I finished all the way through was Tales of Symphonia. Had been over 9 years since I last played the game, and it was one of the first RPG games my wife and I sat down and played through all the way together.
Question 12: What game(s) are you playing right now?
Right now I’m playing on a multiplayer server on Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition. If you play I’m on the Arelith PlanesCities server.
Question 13: What game do you want to play next?
I’m going to head to my local retro game store and see if I can happen to find a copy of Metal Gear Rising: Revengence. I love the soundtrack and really want to give it a shot.
Question 14: In your opinion, what is the best console?
I think the Nintendo Switch is one of the best consoles to date given the functionality and portability. I also think the PlayStation 3 is still one of the best PlayStations due to the robust library of PS1 games that can be found. It’s how I was able to finally get my hands on Legend of Dragoon, and beat that game.
Question 15: Are PC gamers really superior to console players?
This is one of the stalest arguments that I’ve heard. Everyone can enjoy what they want to enjoy simply as that. PC gamers have the advantage of upgrading parts when they want to, where console gamers are left behind I will agree to that. I don’t think that it makes them superior.
Question 16: What’s your opinion on Fortnite?
Before it was saturated by kids and Ninja, it was a decent game at first. However, thanks to consumerism and said above the game is no longer fun. I quit playing when the second season came out. It’s funny because I have coworkers that have kids that all they want for Christmas and birthdays are V-Bucks.
Question 17: Have you ever watched a Twitch stream?
Absolutely. I’m part of a group known as the Monstrosities and let me tell you they are some of the best folk you can come across. I haven’t had a bad experience.
Question 18: Have you ever streamed yourself on Twitch or YouTube?
I do stream on Twitch under the username Kazerthan, though with my work schedule I only get a chance to do it once or twice a week.
Question 19: Have you ever used a walkthrough?
I have many times used walkthroughs, but generally, on games, I have already beaten once. This is just to see if there were secrets and hidden items I had missed the first time around.
Question 20: What’s the best weapon you’ve ever used in a game?
The Shining Blade from Guild Wars 2. One of the many legendary weapons you can craft (and I have it in my possession). Storywise it was used to banish away an old evil, but in-game it glows a purple and gold aura and hums with magic.
Question 21: Have you ever had to stop playing a game because it was too scary?
Yes, that would be Dino Crisis 3. I was only 9 years old when I first started playing it, and when I got to the part where they introduce the raptors my mom’s ex-boyfriend came behind me and spooked me. I immediately rushed to turn the PS1 off and never touched it again.
Question 22: Has a game’s storyline ever made you cry?
God of War for the PlayStation 4 did. Going through all the trials and tribulations between Kratos and Atreus was tough but it was all for letting someone they loved to go in peace.
Question 23: What’s your favourite fighting class: warrior, mage, or rogue, and why?
Spellsword! I love magic and being a knight. But if I had to choose it would have to be mage so I could conjure up my own familiars.
Question 24: What’s your favourite game genre?
Action/Adventure games and RPGs.
Question 25: Do you prefer multiplayer games or to go solo?
It depends on the game really, and if I have any friends that play the game too.
Question 26: Do you prefer co-op or player vs player?
I use to be a Player vs Player kind of guy, but my frustration levels would get high so I reverted to co-op and I have much more fun in the game.
Question 27: What is the first console you ever owned?
My parents got me the original GameBoy when I was really young, but I also know we had a Sega Genesis so I suppose the Sega Genesis was the first one.
Question 28: What or who got you into video games in the first place?
That would be my dad. He had a PC and would play games on there like Doom and I would watch him play. That grew into a trend during my childhood as I watch him play several games like Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Duke Nukem, and Neverwinter Nights.
Question 29: What is the longest amount of time you have sat playing games non-stop?
Just recently here on Neverwinter Nights. I’ve joined a multiplayer server so plenty of dungeons and quests to do. Over the weekend it went from 11 am to 1 am the next day.
Question 30: If video games didn’t exist anymore, what would you do?
I would more than likely be outside more often, or watch more TV.
Question 31: What is your favourite song from a game?
It ‘Has To Be This Way’ from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The ultimate track to a boss that ties the story altogether.
Question 32: Have you ever wanted to live in a world from a game? If so, which one and why?
I would want to live in the world of Pokemon for sure, specifically the Kalos region. That region is my favorite and introduced my favorite eeveelutuon Sylveon.
Question 33: Which video game character do you most wish you were like?
Physically that would be Zidane from Final Fantasy IX. Mentally that would be Genis Sage from Tales of Symphonia.
Question 34: What’s a game you’ve spent the most amount of money on?
Guild Wars 2 if you count microtransactions. Have to have those glider skins and unbreakable harvesting tools. And salvage robots.
Question 35: If you could have one power of any video game character, who would it be?
The warlock abilities from Destiny 2, more specifically the Stormcaller branch. Throwing lightning around and have a little ball of energy float around to aid you would be awesome.
Question 36: Who do you usually choose as your fighter in Super Smash Brothers/Soul Calibur?
For Smash Bros I main between Wolf and Link, though Wolf is my first choice. I haven’t played Soul Calibur since its 2nd installment on the GameCube and even then I was always using Link.
Question 37: Xbox or PlayStation? Choose one!
*Holds his Nintendo Switch tightly* Why no Nintendo? Fine, it would be PlayStation because I never owned an Xbox and never saw a want to.
Question 38: What are you hoping for at the next E3?
I hope we get more information and some looks into Metroid Prime 4 and some form of StarFox game aside from what we saw with Starlink: Battle for Atlas
Question 39: Who is your favourite villain from a video game and why?
Richter Abend from Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World. Throughout the game, he has his own ambition which ties into the ending of it all.
Question 40: What is your favourite game from your childhood?
Starfox Adventures. It’s corny, the story is conflicting to what we would see in a Starfox game but given the history of the game’s development there are good reasons behind it.
Question 41: Are there any games you’re really bad at?
I’m not very good at racing games. I play Mario Kart bit even then I’m not that great.
Question 42: Have you ever seen somebody get really angry when they lose?
Not physically but I get people that like to rage quit when something doesn’t go right. I use to be like that but took time to mentally realize it’s only a game.
Question 43: What’s your favourite game series of all time?
Man, I have several. Pokemon, Elder Scrolls, Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, the list just goes on.
Question 44: What’s more important: action or story?
Both honestly and thanks to difficulty settings players have more of a choice if they would rather indulge in the story without much action or more action to reward them with a story.
Question 45: Is there a game that is considered to be really bad but is your secret guilty pleasure?
Said it more times than I can count but its StarFox Adventures. Fight me.
Question 46: If you could have any video game character as your best friend, who would it be?
Fox McCloud. I think we could be best pals.
Question 47: If you could marry any game character, who would it be?
Didn’t I already answer this question when I said, Sheena? That’s what I’m sticking with
Question 48: Would you rather have loads of time to play games but only be able to buy two games a year, or be able to buy loads of games but never have much time to play them?
Loads of time to play but only buy two games a year. I like to invest time into games rather than blowing through them.
Question 49: In your opinion, what is the worst game of all time that you’ve played?
The Last Guardian. It was not what I expected and with plenty of game-breaking bugs, it was the worst.
Question 50: Would you give up video games for life and receive $500,000 in cash, or would you refuse the money?
Refuse the money because why not just make the money by playing games for others?
Bonus question: Who was your first gaming YouTuber?
The first one was PeanutButterGamer. The first video I saw of his was the Dreamcast video.
