In case you haven’t heard yet, Apex Legends is a new free to play Battle Royale Game. You know; these games everyone has been obsessed with, where you have to be the last one alive to win. I personally don’t enjoy most Battle Royale games, but that was until Apex Legends came along.
Even though Apex Legends is similar to other Battle Royale games it was still able to set itself apart. Here’s what makes Apex Legends so fun to play.
Before you even get on the dropship to fight the other teams, you get to choose a Legend. Every Legend has different abilities, ultra abilities, and passive abilities. The design of each legend is different and unique, just like their voices and abilities which fit perfectly with the personality of every character. For example: The mysterious ninja-like character, Wraith, with her portals, or the clown of the bunch, Mirage, with his decoys.
In Fortnite the characters you play don’t have any personality to make them stand out besides maybe the skins. It’s the same in PUBG and H1Z1, but those have a military feel, where you are just a human with guns trying to survive without any special abilities or magic.
Giving the Legends character and a small teaser of their backstories in the intro of the game makes Apex stand out.
When choosing your Legend and during a match, depending on your actions, each Legend has different lines which bring them to life.
Here are some examples.
Mirage: *singing* “My squad is going to beat up your squad”
“Alright who wants to step up? Anyone? I’ll be down there.”
“I love when the spotlight is on me.”
“You got bamboozled.”
Mirage, as typical class clown, has many funny lines but you can also see how highly he thinks of himself.
Wraith: “Trust just your eyes and you will lose.”
“Something wrong with your head if you fight me
“Try not to blink you may miss me”
Her lines support her wise and mythical appearance.
Once you choose a Legend you begin in a dropship with two other people on your team and up to 20 other teams of three. My hope is that they will add solo’s, duo’s, and squads later on so you don’t need two other friends with you every time. If you don’t have a full team you get random players assigned to your team. In the dropship, one teammate will be assigned Jumpmaster. When he launches, all teammates launch and follow automatically. In case you want to launch and fly solo, you can but I would advise against that because most teams will stick together and fighting three people alone will most likely get you killed. In every other Battle Royale game I played you had to coordinate the landing spot via mic or marks just to make sure all team mates land in the same area.
In the event that you’re downed, your teammates can revive you, but if you get killed they have a chance to get your banner before the time runs out to respawn you at a Respawn Beacon. A Respawn Beacon is a red apparatus with a green pillar of light in the middle, which calls a small dropship for your previously dead teammate to drop out next to said Beacon. This feature is pretty amazing as it prevents you from having to sit idly by and watch the rest of the match as a spectator like in other Battle Royale games. Be aware other Teams will see and hear the dropship and might decide to attack because the respawned teammate won’t have armor or weapons to defend himself with.
Even though Apex Legends is free to play the graphics are stunning with enough color, but also not too much unlike H1Z1. The map seems bigger than Call Of Duty: Blackout’s and it’s not empty like the maps in H1Z1. The gameplay feels smooth and I rarely experience frame drops or lags.
Most weapons feel well balanced, besides of course the golden ones. Luckily you rarely find golden weapons lying around, which are guns you can find everywhere but with all attachments golden. Normally you have to find attachments like bigger magazines or scopes for each gun by finding the attachments you need yourself. Attachments, body armor, backpacks and knockdown shields come in different tiers which are sorted like in Fortnite (by color), with white being the most common and golden the rarest.
The last drop of a match has a guaranteed Legendary gold weapon, which is a shotgun or sniper rifle. A problem might be the different sizes of every Legends hitbox due to their different body types.
Another small issue I have with not just Apex Legends but most Battle Royale games is armor. If you are unlucky to find only white armor and you encounter someone with purple or even gold armor your chances of victory are small. In the intro, they say: “When they kill you, they are better.” But are they really or were they just lucky to have better armor than you?
Since it is a free-to-play game, you shouldn’t be surprised to find microtransactions that luckily only affect the appearance of guns and Legends. Since it is a first-person shooter you don’t see your Legend while playing, only during finishers. Of course, you can buy Caustic and Mirage but those Legends don’t guarantee a win and you can easily unlock them by playing.
Just like in almost every multiplayer game you have players who hack. Many hackers have already been banned but the game will probably never be free of hackers.
For me Apex is the most fun Battle Royal I have played so far. I love the Legends, Gameplay and Graphics.
What do you like or dislike about Apex Legends? Let me know.
