Over the past couple of weeks, we gamers have been gifted with a lot of news about a series near and dear to many of our heart. We got our first look at Borderlands 3, saw that we are getting an update to The Handsome Collection to get better graphics, and that the original Borderlands game is getting updated for current consoles. I have extremely fond memories of the Borderlands series in general, but that first game has a special place in my heart because my brother and I played a lot of it when we first got our Xbox 360. But when Borderlands news was being dolled out the other day, I had the typical gamer response… where is the Switch version?
I know that this is such a broken record at this point that we couldn’t even glue the pieces back together, but people say it so often for a good reason; they want these games on the system because they have the system. So many other games are getting ported or released on the Switch that whenever a game is announced and there is no Switch release, it just doesn’t make sense. I don’t see why the series isn’t on the Switch already, but the thing is, I think it is coming.
I think it’s pretty obvious that the Switch could run Borderlands (all 3 games, but I’m specifically talking about 1) so there’s no real argument that the system couldn’t run it. It’s a much older game that has some pretty good graphics, but nothing ground-breaking. The game might struggle if there was 4 play co-op, but that would only be in docked mode so it’s still possible. The DLC could also probably be included, as games back then definitely weren’t as big as they are now, so it could fit on the cartridge.
So why do I think it’s already happening/is going to be revealed soon? It seems odd in the first place that the Switch was left out of all these reveals, and there have been a few rumours about something possibly happening in the coming week. A Nintendo Direct. Yes, there are rumours going around once again that a Nintendo Direct is happening soon, since there are a lot of big games coming out in the next couple of months and Nintendo has admitted that they still have some games up their sleeves to reveal. Borderlands is definitely a very adult franchise, but as we have all seen over the past couple of years, Nintendo has done away with the image that they are only a family friendly brand that wants to be marketed that way. They want to appeal to all gamers and a great way to do that is to have more shooters and FPS’ on their consoles and handhelds. I also don’t think Nintendo cares about how many older games get ported to their consoles, as having new franchises will only build relationships with developers, and bring in new consumers. New consoles are always getting old games and it’s stupid that the Switch gets criticism for being a “port machine”. I will gladly double dip on Borderlands for the Switch, along with many other games.
So yes, I do think that at the next Nintendo Direct (whenever it is) will come with news of the Borderlands series coming to Switch. Do I bet my life on it? Not exactly. But if some of you want to bet a couple of dollars, I’ll gladly wager that. Until then, you’re just going to have to keep smashing people’s faces in with Brick on you PS4, Xbox and PC. If you guys have any predictions, let me know and we can have a conversation about it!
