Welcome to Boss Fight Friday, a weekly video game hot stove where the writers of Game Savvy give their take on video games and where you, the reader, get to start the weekend off right. Last week we discussed the year in gaming so far and crowned our game of the year if the award were chosen today (luckily they’re not). This week we got discussing all the most recent Pokémon news and even discussed how to catch shiny Pokémon on the site. So, why not have a Pokémon themed Boss Fight Friday?! So without further ado, let’s get into and of course, feel free to leave your answers in the comments below!
1. Obvious first question… who’s your favorite Pokémon starter and why?
Steve: Totodile. He’s the only non-grass starter I’ve ever chosen and each evolution just gets more badass.
Nadine: Chimchar because he was my first starter.
Christian: Charmander, he was the first one I ever picked and he’s probably my favorite just from nostalgia. Also, Ash’s Charmander/Charizard is pretty iconic from the anime so that left a big impression on me as a fan.
Em: Charmander. I love fire type Pokémon and Charmander is OG, plus has a sweet little waddle and a happy face.
Tyler: I’ve always been a huge fan of Totodile. Though it may be tiny, it is fierce and Feralligator is a beast. Plus, it opens up my team to putting Arcanine on it.
2. Which Generation of Pokémon is your favorite?
Steve: Gen 2 easy. It added a good amount of interesting Pokémon and it hadn’t quite jumped the shark.
Nadine: Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
Christian: The third generation from Hoenn is my favorite. That was when I was prime time age for Pokémon. I can still name all of the ones from that gen. I feel like that was the first time that Pokémon was like “ok you guys want new creatures so here’s a whole bunch of them”
Em: First Generation. It was the gen when I was into Pokémon as a kid, and we rewatch the show a lot now. Even when I play the other games I’m mostly sad it isn’t the ones I’m familiar with from my childhood.
Tyler: It definitely has to be the second generation. Original is so classic but second generation introduced so many interesting new Pokemon plus brought in a number of classics.
3. Who’s your favorite Pokémon?
Steve: Farfetch’d because he’s got the most swagger out of all thePokémon and he’s chill AF. Maybe Delibird he’s Santa lol.
Nadine: I have many favorites mostly either cute or cool Pokémon.
Christian: It’s honestly a toss-up between Charizard and Swampert. They are both just super dope and great starters. I always try and make sure I get both of them in my party no matter what game I am playing.
Em: Jigglypuff! I also like to sing everywhere I go, and Jigglypuff is just a sassy little rascal. Always has been my favorite and always will be. Vulpix and Eevee are close seconds for just being cute. Also Dragonite. There’s lots of cute Pokémon.
Tyler: Dratini. Another Pokemon that I know evolves into such a beast. And using Thunderwave + Bind + Slam is a super combo that can beat most trainers.
4. If you were a gym leader what type of Pokémon would you use?
Steve: Probably normal because 1. I’m a basic bitch and 2. I get to see kids cry when I wipe their party with Rollout.
Nadine: I would use a variety only one type is boring.
Christian: Most likely Fire. Mainly because I tend to lean more towards the fire starters than others. The attacks just seem more powerful when you use them. I would much rather call out FLAMETHROWER than WATER GUN.
Em: Probably fire. I just really like fire in general. Fairy is a close second cause it’s as close as I could get to weaponizing glitter.
Tyler: I think electric. My favourite strategy is using Thunderwave to PRZ my opponent which allows me to not only attack first but can also save me from some damage for a move or two. So I can use a speedster like Raichu or a powerhouse like Ampharos and still come out on top by frustrating opponents.
5. How excited are you for Pokémon Sun and Sheild?
Steve: I’m pretty hyped this feels like it will be a good launching point for the series on home console.
Nadine: Modestly excited. The newer Pokémon games disappointed me so now I am not hyped about it until I play.
Christian: I’m SUPER stoked for Pokémon Sword especially after the most recent Nintendo Direct. I’m excited to see more of the new creatures and especially to see what they do with the story. Pokémon Company and GameFreak seem to have been listening to fans both new and old.
Em: Pretty excited now that I have a switch and have really gotten back into Pokémon lately.
6. What did you name your rival back in the day?
Steve: Something mean, usually stupid or AssFace.
Christian: Originally I named my Rival “Gary” like the anime. I think now I just pick a random name, usually one of my friends.
Em: SO in Let’s Go Eevee I was at the point where I needed to name my rival and was just going to give them a random name when I got a notification on my phone from Steven, my fellow Game Savvy writer. So my rival is named Steven. Sorry dude.
Tyler: There have been many names for my Rivals. Back when I was a kid I went with the classic Gary. Most recently I named him Blue. But some classic names definitely includes Assface, Butthole, and PooBum because I was a super mature kid growing up.
7. What’s your favorite Eevee evolution?
Steve: Eevee is perfect as is, but Joleon is the GOAT.
Nadine: Umbreon (especially the shiny version which has blue stripes)
Christian: Eevee is perfect the way it is without evolving. But Umbreon because of Colosseum.
Em: Flareon!!! Fire plus Eevee.
Tyler: Espeon is a great evolution.
8. Which Pokémon would make up your perfect party? (no legendaries)
Steve: Feralagator, Jolteon, Snorlax, Sudowoodo, Arcanine, Dragonite.
Christian: Charizard, Mudkip, Snorlax, Rockruff, Metagross, Lucario
Em: Eevee, Jigglypuff, Clefairy, Arcanine, Vulpix, Rapidash. They are my current Let’s Go team, unofficially named Team Cutie. The reason for this is obvious.
Tyler: Blastoise, Arcanine, Dragonite, Ampharos, Tyranitar, Aalakazam.
9. Which Pokémon is your least favorite, why?
Steve: Mr. Mime. I’m 90% sure he’s just a creepy dude acting like a Pokémon.
Nadine: The trash bag, ice cream and other objects that were made into Pokémon. It just feels uncreative and boring. I mean seriously… oh look a keychain appeared.
Christian: Mimikyu, for obvious reasons.
Em: Mr. Mime. Fuck that guy.
Tyler: Klefki, the fucking keychain Pokemon. This is someone who ran out of ideas so they were looking around their house and was like, “why not a keychain Pokémon”. Because it’s a STUPID IDEA DAVE. LET IT GO.
10. Which is your favorite legendary Pokémon?
Em: Apparently Dragonite isn’t really legendary so I guess Mewtwo.
Tyler: Mewtwo. Not only is he powerful but he’s got such a great story and was one of the better anime villains period.
