Welcome to Boss Fight Friday, a weekly video game hot stove where the writers of Game Savvy give their take on video games and where you, the reader, get to start the weekend off right. Last week we discussed all things The Witcher. From the books to the video games to the newly released trailer, we left no stone unturned. This week we’re discussing all things Fire Emblem: Three Houses! We’ve got a lot of huge fans of the series and some great content for those of you who haven’t played a Fire Emblem game before, including all the Fire Emblem games ranked,
So without further ado, let’s get into and of course, feel free to leave your answers in the comments below!
Q1: Who’s currently playing or will be playing Fire Emblem? How do you like it so far? Why are you thinking of picking it up?
Em: I’ve been playing it for a couple of days now, and I’m addicted! It’s the first game in a while that I’ve felt like I couldn’t put down, to the point where I caved and finally brought my switch to play on lunch breaks at work.
Steven: I’ve enjoyed past Fire Emblem games and this one looks to improve upon the previous installments.
Alan: I got my hands on it a bit early and haven’t put it down since then. My first entry to the series was Fire Emblem Fates and this installment is just that, turned up to 11. There’s simply more of everything, and THIS is how franchises should be transitioning onto Switch. I absolutely love it.
Christian: I’ve considered picking it up after friends and most of the internet has praised it. Maybe during Black Friday if it goes down in price enough.
Dennis: Yeah, I’m currently playing it and enjoying myself with it. I’m 30 hours in and happy to report that It’s an excellent game. It has a lot of aesthetics to other games I am a fan of, which is always a good thing.
Tyler: I will be picking it up this weekend and I’m super pumped! I’m picking it up because I’ve never played a Fire Emblem game before and this seems like a great first one to get into. Also, fucking Sterling over at Parallax and his DAMN Fire Emblem ramblings.
Q2: Is this or will this be your first Fire Emblem game? What about this game appealed / appeals to you?
Em: This was my first Fire Emblem game. I learned a lot about Fire Emblem from reading Sterling’s articles and was excited to be able to try a new one, especially when I saw how it had a pretty Hogwarts feel to it. That “leader of a house in a school” thing felt like some kind of elaborate fantasy I would have imagined as a super Harry Potter obsesses child, and it’s as great as I expected it’d be.
Steven: No I’ve been playing them since GBA, the tactical turn-based system in games like Wargroove, Advance Wars, and Fire Emblem is just really fun to me.
Alan: This is my second FE title. The combat and life sim stuff speaks to me in a way that’s reminiscent of Persona. It’s just fun meeting a wide cast of characters and watching them evolve over time, not only in my relationships with them but the relationships between them… Also… picking a waifu.
Christian: This would be yes, and mainly all of the things that people have compared to Harry Potter.
Dennis: Fact, it’s my first Fire Emblem game, I never had the chance or motivation to get into the series since I was never aware of the series until the last decade-plus when I was the new ones were on Nintendo’s handheld. Which I never owned a DS or 3DS so gave me more of a reason to not get into it.
The appealing part of it, is yes you can see a lot of Harry Potter in it, which I never really saw because the school setting reminded me more so of Valkyria Chronicles 2 (which also had a school setting), but the more I get into, the more I see. Like it’s hard not to make a comparison to Persona with the whole silent protagonist in a game of date management which I know the Persona series for immensely. Add onto that the strategy RPG gameplay of Valkyria Chronicles I see in this game.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is just the best to all worlds and the best game to get into for newcomers.
Tyler: This will definitely be my first Fire Emblem game and I think what appeals to me is the breadth of activity that you get to partake in. From the outside looking in on the Fire Emblem series you here things about tactical combat/gameplay, dating, time-lapses, consequences to your decision making, having children…. there just seems to be so much going on and with the new “Houses” set up it just seems like a really interesting, decision-based game with a ton of depth.
Q3: What are your expectations for Fire Emblem going in? For those who are playing, what were your expectations and did they deliver?
Em: I expected I would be a little thrown by the game style because I’ve only played one other tactical game, and I am honestly not great. My Fire Emblem experience was limited to the mobile game, so I didn’t know how rich the RPG aspects of this game would feel compared to that, and that’s what really pulled me in. There are a ton of characters but they all still feel unique.
Steven: I hope they stick to a similar formula as 3 houses and just keep improving.
Alan: I expected large scale combat, more decisions, a deeper narrative, and a larger cast. This game delivered on everything by just taking classic Fire Emblem and giving you more.
Christian: I honestly know nothing about the franchise or the game itself. If I do get the game I will most likely be going in completely blind. I just hope there is a sorting hat or I will be very disappointed.
Dennis: I knew I was going to like from what I previously mentioned plus the anime aesthetic/art style of the game I look for in Japanese games. I’m a fan. I didn’t realize how much the ‘I’ll like this game’ would evolve into ‘love’ for this game. This is a Game of the Year contender from what I’ve played so far.
Tyler: I don’t have ANY expectations going in which I’m really excited about. I’ve been avoiding guides and reviews although I did listen to IGN’s Nintendo Voice Chat and they had a whole episode on Fire Emblem but they had nothing but good things to say. At the end of the day, I’m expecting a high-quality and very polished Nintendo Game because they always seem to deliver.
Q4: For those currently playing, what house did you pick and why? Who are some of your favorite characters? For those thinking of playing, what house are you leaning towards?
Em: I picked the Blue Lions because Dimitri didn’t seem annoying and it had the highest proportion of characters that were cute. My favourite character is Felix. He’s kind of cranky and has a man bun. Dedue is my other favorite cause he’s a giant fighter that likes cooking and gardening.
Steven: Black eagles because AMERICA CAW CAW
Alan: BLACK EAGLES BABY! I chose them because they had the most interesting mix of characters, and because… waifus. My favorite students have emerged over time as they progress through the game. Dorothea, Linhardt, and Petra have gone from humble students to heavy hitters on the battlefield and it’s been cool to see their character development. Each character in my house has started off as a certain stereotype but then adds a twist, it’s great.
Christian: “Not Slytherin” …..but honestly I have zero clue.
Dennis: I picked Black Eagles just as a big middle finger to the Golden Deer house and the few Twitter gaming friends are all in on as they are in the ‘Claude train.’ I wanted to be different, so I picked the house with a leader that isn’t much of a character – she’s pretty bland, to be honest – that is surrounded by great characters in her house that make the game, even more, entertaining with their interactions with each other and the player.
Although, I will say Black Eagle’s Dorothea is the obvious best girl of the game. If you disagree, then you’re wrong
Tyler: Literally have NO idea. Everyone seems to want to go with the Black Eagles which makes me kind of want to go with another house like the Blue Lions. I think the real question is, why is NO ONE going with the Red House? I can’t even find what they’re called?! WHAT AM I MISSING?! I can’t wait to play!
