Final Boss Friday’s is a video game debate, discussion and overall friendly talk between all the members of the Game Savvy team about the industries current issues, acomplishments, and current news. On Friday’s everyone is asked discussion questions by resident Nintendo writer Sterling Guilherme, and for the remainder of the day, we let the conversation flow as naturally, friendly, and overall as fun as possible. We really hope you guys enjoy as we had a lot of fun doing this and we hope to continue in the future. Every discussion will be posted on Friday nights! Thank you and enjoy!
Our first topic is about more recent games. Since Mario Party is out today, do you think we will see more Mario spin off games like the sports games or even new ideas?
Steven Jones [2:07 PM]
Maybe a few. Nintendo really ran that into the ground on the Wii. I’d like to see a second Super Mario strikers, the soccer game, and I’m not even a fan of soccer.
Sterling [2:09 PM]
I’m curious about your comment on the wii?
Kiley [2:11 PM]
Mario IS Nintendo – Nintendo IS Mario. I think if Nintendo can find a way to break into the eSports arena with a Mario game, they will.
Steven Jones [2:15 PM]
I guess what I meant to say was that the Wii was the end of that fad. It started back before your time(lol), with the N64. We had mario everything, golf, tennis, Kart you name it we had it, the furthered this trend on the gamecube with sequels those mentioned and more. They would shove mario into anything even games like NBA Street V3. So when the Wii came along they had pretty much ran most of their mario sports games into the ground, until they decided having team mario face off against Team Sonic in the Olympics.
Sterling [2:15 PM]
Nintendo has failed to notice their online communities before though. My brother and I were very big into the Mario Strikers Charge competetive community and Nintendo hasnt made a new game in that series for a long time.
Steven Jones [2:18 PM]
Also their online service is trash imo
Sterling [2:18 PM]
Mario baseball and soccer continued on the wii, but I don’t think they liked how edgy Mario soccer was
It’s still better than the wii and wii u though
Steven Jones [2:19 PM]
Mario Strikers was hands down my favorite mario sports game
Kiley [2:19 PM]
Everything is better than the wii U
Sterling [2:20 PM]
I’m sure Mario Golf is next on the Switch tbh
I wonder if we will see more than 1 Mario party on the Switch? Gamecube had 4, Wii had 2
Steven Jones [2:25 PM]
N64 had 3 right? (edited)
Sterling [2:26 PM]
Em [2:26 PM]
Mario Kart Battle Royale. You have to completely eliminate the other karts. I would legitimately play this. In all honesty though Mario kart is the only Mario game I’ve played since the NES.
Sterling [2:26 PM]
You mean… battle mode? xD
Steven Jones [2:27 PM]
No she means battle royale 100 karts enter… 1 kart drives away.
Sterling [2:28 PM]
I think that would just be a random mess
Steven Jones [2:28 PM]
Works with fortnite and PUBG just put them in a bigger arena
Mario Kart: Death Race
Kiley [2:29 PM]
I would play MK: Death Race so fast!
Sterling [2:29 PM]
I use to have a world record in Mario Kart and even i can admit that typical Mario Kart incorporates a ot of luck
Em [2:30 PM]
Yes see!!!! And you can pick up stuff to add to your kart
Sterling [2:30 PM]
PUBG an Fortnite is way more about skill
TylerMV [2:31 PM]
I definitely think we’ll see more Mario spin-off games. We’ve already had Mario show up in Odyssey, Tennis, Party, Mario Run. I think Nintendo will be milking Mario until they day they go bankrupt, as they should.
Kiley [2:32 PM]
Holy crap, yes! Just mod your kart as you go!
Sterling [2:34 PM]
I wonder if we will ever get Mario Kart 9 this gen
TylerMV [2:34 PM]
Has there every been a Mario hockey game?
Steven Jones [2:35 PM]
@TylerMV there effin should be
Sterling [2:35 PM]
I don’t think that will ever happen. Hockey isn’t big in Asia or Europe
TylerMV [2:36 PM]
Wow @Sterling Mr. Debbie Downer over here. A spicy boi can dream
Sterling [2:37 PM]
lol I know. I’m just trying to be realistic
You can play Hockey in the Mario and Sonic Winter Olympic Games
Em [2:38 PM]
was Mario curling a thing?
Curling is big in Asia now.
Sterling [2:39 PM]
If you want a Mario Curling game, you’re way too Canadian
Em [2:41 PM]
It’s the only sport I played in high school!
Kiley [2:43 PM]
I played band in high school.
Sterling [2:44 PM]
I played football, basketball, rugby, soccer and track
Steven Jones [2:44 PM]
I played angry nerd with an attitude problem. (edited)
Sterling [2:45 PM]
Em [2:45 PM]
Make a Mario about that, Nintendo
Sterling [2:46 PM]
Mario’s parents get a divorce and he acts up in school
Steven Jones [2:46 PM]
We did organize a weekly student vs teacher football game in the park
Kiley [2:46 PM]
Steven Jones [2:46 PM]
Kiley [2:46 PM]
Sorry, Super Mario: Postal
Em [2:47 PM]
OR it’s about Waluigi.
Steven Jones [2:48 PM]
Sterling [2:52 PM]
Okay, the other game that comes out today is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. I know a few people here a bit burnt out with AC; why? and for those of you who like it, what intrigued you with this entry in the series?
Em [2:56 PM]
I think they did a fantastic job reinventing the series with Assassins Creed Origins last year, and it looks like they’ve what went well with that game (more of an open world, more flushed out side quests and regions to explore within ancient history) and really developed that with Odyssey.
Kiley [2:56 PM]
I don’t like Assassin’s Creed. I’m a dedicated “spray & pray”er or punch you in the face-er. Stealth games don’t do it for me as I don’t have the patience. I did like jumping off the tall buildings but overall, I hate repeating the same stuff over. I haven’t encountered an AC that held my attention. The one with the ship did for about five minutes but then it was the same ol’, same ol’. I do, however, want to try Odyssey.
Em [2:57 PM]
I also just really really love all of the Assassins Creed games, it’s my #3 favourite game series and I would probably buy literally anything they made and tried to sell me, but from what I’ve seen of Odyssey so far they’ve really knocked it out of the park this time (stay tuned for when my power is on and I review it this week)
Steven Jones [2:57 PM]
In short AC:Origins was too grindy. So at first I was very hesitant to give it a second look, the twitter community has started to change my mind
TylerMV [3:01 PM]
I think people get burnt out by AC is because I think the game fails to sustain an interesting game-loop based on the length of each game. With Halo, the 30-seconds of fun last for about 10 – 15 hours of campaign time. With AC it can last 20 – 80 – 100+ hours. I’m a little more interested in Odyssey because while the game-loop might remain the same, the reward system might be different now based on the new RPG mechanics and systems they’ve implemented. In former AC games, there was a lack of rewards and customization. Now, the new rewards and customizations add a layer to the game loop that makes it more interesting and sustainable.
Steven Jones [3:01 PM]
I didnt even finish origins because of all the grinding, now I feel like I need to before playing odyssey
Sterling [3:02 PM]
Em [3:02 PM]
Apparently Odyssey has more decision making and different endings. Previous games have less replayability, so this will be a big change.
Sterling [3:02 PM]
WHAT AC GAME ARE YOU PLAYING THATS 80 LONG
Steven Jones [3:03 PM]
AC games can take a while if you solve all the puzzles and side quest
Kiley [3:04 PM]
@Em That’s what’s intriguing me!
Sterling [3:04 PM]
I never understood the whole “different endings means replayability” You play the game again and make a few different choices for an ending you can look up
AC games just have a ton of map markers that make it look like their game is full of stuff when its just 3 different type of objectives that you have to do 30 times each
follow this person extremely slowly for 10 minutes
Kiley [3:06 PM]
Em [3:06 PM]
Well if you look at it from a generic standpoint, yeah, but if you make conscious decisions to play a character a certain way throughout (the game has dialogue options which is also new), and the payout for your game play style it’s being rewarded with a different outcome, it makes that integrated RPG style of play more satisfying. I know you don’t play RPGs with that mindset that I do, @Sterling , but for me it’s like my fav games added something that makes a game more rewarding for me, and I’m hella pumped.
Hey GameSavvy readers! For more, see my articles on morality in RPGs *winky face*
They also added ROMANCE!
Kiley [3:10 PM]
Sterling [3:10 PM]
Yea none of that is what I look for in an RPG. I want to be able to actually play the game differently. It also wouldn’t matter what kind of character I’m playing as in your sense, I’m still climbing up the same buildings, do the same boring follow missions
But honestly, i wish i could play RPG’s like you do Em, it seems much more fun and integrating.
I think a game like Skyrim or fallout would work for that, but not Assassin’s Creed
I think their characters are too established
and if they weren’t, then I feel like the story would be worse off trying to incorporate a character that is very generic. Which is a big reason I dropped AC, the story was becoming a huge afterthought and wasn’t being consistent after they killed off Desmond for some reason
Em [3:13 PM]
I think it will work well in Assassin’s Creed, because the premise is going back and living through someone else’s eyes. Give me the option to actually change history through my actions!
Steven Jones [3:13 PM]
What games do you like Sterling loll
Em that’s what originally drew me to the AC franchise. I played through the first one and was instantly hooked; I started losing interest about half way through black flag.
Sterling [3:15 PM]
ANything with a good story or that is fun
I really like Black Flag, i’m very excited they’re making a full game out of it with Skull & Bones
Em [3:16 PM]
I suggest you all play Syndicate. If you don’t like AC then you probably still won’t but it is my favourite.
Assassins Creed Black Flag?
Sterling [3:16 PM]
Steven Jones [3:17 PM]
I hated syndicate tbh
I just couldnt get into it
Sterling [3:17 PM]
I don’t think I’ll waste the money on a game you just said I wouldn’t like xD
My favorite were 2 and Black Flag
Em [3:21 PM]
I like that they’re remastering everything now. The Rogue remaster was great.
Sterling [3:22 PM]
I really use to love AC, the story just wasn’t there after the 3rd game which really hurt it in my opinion. Yearly releases just aren’t good for any game series. it doesn’t leave enough time to incorporate criticism
Steven Jones [3:24 PM]
I cant stand it when games level lock content, in Black Flag I got to a point where it’s like “your ship needs more upgrades before you proceed”in origins I got to around level 20 something and it was like you need to be at least X level to do this
Like dont tell me what I can and cant do let me try and fail.
Sterling [3:25 PM]
Plus I liked in the 2nd, Brotherhood and Revalations that you play as Ezio. I got attached to him. Now every game is a different guy.
Steven Jones [3:25 PM]
I like Ezio but I feel like they didnt need to spend 3 games on him.
2 and brotherhood were more than enough
I loved the TD aspect in brotherhood
Sterling [3:27 PM]
Steven Jones [3:27 PM]
Sterling [3:27 PM]
I LOVED IT
Steven Jones [3:27 PM]
That and you basically build up your Assassin army
Ya know what, I changed my mind
Ezio did deserve all 3 games
Em [3:29 PM]
Ezio is everything.
Steven Jones [3:30 PM]
Edward Kenway(black flag) is best Assassin
I think I need to replay the entire AC series lol
Sterling [3:31 PM]
Black flag was barely an AC game
Steven Jones [3:33 PM]
My favorite game in the series was the first one
But Kenway was my favorite Assassin
Sterling [3:34 PM]
The very first? I find it boring as shit
Steven Jones [3:35 PM]
I loved it, I feel it had the best overall stroy
Sterling [3:35 PM]
i think you;re the first person I have ever heard say that
Steven Jones [3:36 PM]
I am the minority in this situation
Em [3:36 PM]
I had wanted to do a full replay from start to finish before Odyssey but didn’t have time. Maybe I will in January, see how much of the year it takes me.
Sterling [3:36 PM]
It’s just doing the same thing like 8 times. Trailing some dude, waiting to kill him in a crowded place and than listening to him talk before he dies.
I don’t mean to shit on what you like
Even though you shit on Final Fantasy
Steven Jones [3:41 PM]
Final fantasy is shit sooooo
Sorry this is the nice place
Sterling [3:42 PM]
Don’t go there or I’ll fire back
Steven Jones [3:42 PM]
Do it son
I ain’t scurd
Em [3:44 PM]
Well I don’t shit on Final Fantasy… 😥
JK though, I’m resigned to the fact that I’m the only one who likes a lot of the things I like.
Steven Jones [3:44 PM]
I like a lot of stuff. Just not trash like FF
Sterling [3:47 PM]
Darksiders is trash
Steven Jones [3:48 PM]
The first one didnt age well and the second one was a bit repetitive
Also darksiders isnt even my favorite series
Kiley [3:48 PM]
I said it was boring waaaayyyy up there.
Sterling [3:49 PM]
wtf is your fav series
also Final Fantasy isnt mine lol
Steven Jones [3:50 PM]
I dont know that I have a favorite series
Mass effect, MGS, Resident Evil… those are the 3 that come to mind. So do your worst, I’m willing to admit each one has it flaws
Em [3:59 PM]
Bet no one can guess mine… :smirk:
Steven Jones [3:59 PM]
Kiley [4:00 PM]
Sterling [4:08 PM]
I’ve never even played darksiders. I just wanted to bug you
Steven Jones [4:11 PM]
Try harder son.
Steven Jones [4:37 PM]
Any other question boy I’m looking to dive into mario party Asap
Sterling [4:47 PM]
You bought it?
I’m really enjoying it. I though I wouldn’t like the smaller boards, but it really works for the Switch. Getting more starts quicker feels better and is more fun
Steven Jones [4:55 PM]
Yeah I bought that and AC odyssey on the way home
Sterling [4:55 PM]
Okaaaaaay, neeeeexxxxxxttt queeesssstion
Once again in the news, everyone is freaking out about PSN name changes? I don’t understand why this is such a hot topic. I;ve had mine for a few years and I’ve never thought about changing it. It doesn’t devalue my PS4 at all
Steven Jones [4:59 PM]
See I’m in the camp of people that want to change there PSN name because I started mine when I was in high school and it’s stupid now, I’ve also changed my online persona to something I’d be happy with going into games media.
It’s more of a quality of life change than anything
Em [5:02 PM]
I think lots of people have embarrassing ones from when they were young, and now want to update them to showcase how cool they are. I think being able to change it is alright, but not the biggest deal? I’ve had the same Xbox name for 10 years and I’m not sick of it yet.
Sterling [5:28 PM]
Should have picked better names NERDS
I see why people want to change them, some just act like it’s going to make PS4 into something way better
PS4 is already fantastic
Steven Jones [5:31 PM]
I agree 100%
Sterling [5:34 PM]
Steven Jones [5:34 PM]
Sterling [5:36 PM]
There are a lot of rumours flying around this week, mainly that Kingdom Hearts is coming to Switch and that Rocksteady is working on a new Batman Game.
I haven’t played Arkham Knight but I heard it wasn’y the greatest
I liked the previous games, but do you think Rocksteady should focus on other superheroes?
Steven Jones [5:38 PM]
I heard that it’s a Justice League game and not just batman. Arkham knight was great but I relied to heavily on the batmobile
Sterling [5:40 PM]
I liked the idea of playing as Nightwing
Steven Jones [5:42 PM]
Nightwing is awesome. But Red Hood will always be my favorite
Sterling [5:48 PM]
I feel like the Justice League would take a lot of licensing
Steven Jones [5:49 PM]
With the success of the Arkham games I feel it wouldnt be that difficult for them to get the license they needed
Sterling [5:49 PM]
Money wise though. It’s what killed Telltale
Steven Jones [5:50 PM]
Poor planning killed TT
Sterling [5:51 PM]
I think it was multiple aspects
Steven Jones [5:53 PM]
Yeah. I honestly feel like the only Heroes that should get games are low level hereos. Not super OP chracters… but shit a Wonder Woman game would be dope.
Sterling [6:02 PM]
A Vampyr style Constantine game
Oh my looooord
Steven Jones [6:02 PM]
Sterling [6:03 PM]
I feel like this segment is just you and I today Steven
Steven Jones [6:04 PM]
I honestly had to check it was just you and I messaging back and forth earlier (edited)
Sterling [6:19 PM]
Em [7:42 PM]
Yeah now would definitely be the time to make well made super hero games
Sorry guys my phone was dead but the power is back! I’m no longer freezing to death!
Sterling [8:42 PM]
Good, we were worried!
Steven Jones [8:43 PM]
How cold is it there right now?
Em [8:44 PM]
It sat around 5C today, it snowed a bunch last night
Steven Jones [8:45 PM]
That 41F that’s shorts and jacket weather round here lol
Its was about 31c here today
Sterling [8:58 PM]
I loooove chilly weather
Steven Jones [8:58 PM]
Sterling [8:58 PM]
WHO WANTS TO TALK ABOUT SPOOKY GAMES
Steven Jones [8:58 PM]
Em [8:59 PM]
ME ME ME
Sterling [9:01 PM]
In August of 2014… a playable teaser was released on the Playstation store and once finished was revealed to be a new Silent Hill game being made by Hideo Kojima… I believe it greatly influenced games like Resident Evil 7. Do you think it would have been groundbreaking in the horror genre and why or why not?
Em [9:07 PM]
I don’t actually play horror games cause I’m a big ol chicken, and even zombies games have given me nightmares, but if it was finished I think it would have been pretty spectacular. It was being made in partnership with Benicio del Toro, who is a genius.
Steven Jones [9:09 PM]
PT was absolutely horrifying. I don’t thing RE7 would have been first person if it wasn’t for PT. It would have flipped the horror genre on its head, because not only was it jump scares and gore it was psychologically terrifying. To a regular person it would seem all you did was run around the same part of a house over and over again.
Em [9:09 PM]
I know he’s played a bit of a part in making Death Stranding but apparently not on the same level.
Sterling [9:11 PM]
PT literally made me scream out loud. My friends mom ran into the room
Steven Jones [9:11 PM]
If you pay attention you start to pick up clues about what really happen; the more you figure out the more effed up that game gets. Its just keeps getting deeper and deeper. you didn’t even learn everything after 1 play through. It was incredibly fun and and terrifying.
Em [9:12 PM]
I saw people saying that even after 10 or 20 playthroughs they found new things to be horrified by haha. Genius.
Steven Jones [9:13 PM]
that is the Firefly of games for me. #KeepFlyingAndStayShiny (edited)
Sterling [9:18 PM]
I doubt Death Stranding would have been made
Steven Jones [9:18 PM]
Em [9:19 PM]
Yeah it seems like a bizarre spiritual successor
Sterling [9:21 PM]
I odnt think it’s a spiritual ssuccessor at all. I think its a new idea
I’m sure there were some shared ideas]
Steven Jones [9:23 PM]
Ok Death Stranding is like MGS, No man Sky, and Silent Hill had a beautiful love child and made it get a job in the futurama universe.
Sterling [9:37 PM]
I wonder what we will see from the Silent Hill franchise going forward
Steven Jones [9:38 PM]
hopefully a reboot tbh
i never played them as a kid but i watched my brother play through SH2 and it was bonkers
Sterling [9:41 PM]
I would love to play them but they’re all old and I dont have the consoles
Em [9:44 PM]
Yeah in my PS2 days I was playing happy games like Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and Spyro Enter the Dragonfly. No silent hill for this guy.
Sterling [9:44 PM]
Have you plsyed Resident Evil 7?
Steven Jones [9:44 PM]
I loved RE7
Em [9:45 PM]
No. I think I have it. Mike’s played all of the RE games and I’m pretty sure he said RE7 was too scary for him so there’s no way I would play it.
Steven Jones [9:46 PM]
Am I the horror junkie of game savvy..? (edited)
Sterling [9:47 PM]
No dude I love that shit
Steven Jones [9:49 PM]
hell’s yeah dude
Sterling [9:52 PM]
Have you played Eternal darkness?
Steven Jones [9:52 PM]
i have not?
is it good?
Sterling [9:55 PM]
Ultimate mind fuckery
Sterling [10:36 PM]
I think that wraps it up for today
