Gaming goes through lots of phases and trends. We’ve seen the text adventure phase, the platforming phase, the action-adventure phase and the shooters phase over the years. Now might just be the battle royale phase with PUBG and Fortnite Battle Royale leading the way (despite PUBG’s objections to Fortnite).
While the two games play pretty similarly, Fortnite Battle Royale put its focus on resource collection and building mechanics. The best part? It’s free! So if you’re a poor college student like me this game might just be for you!
Full disclosure, I love playing Fortnite with my friends and roommates. So I decided to jot down everything I like about the game as well as some areas of improvement that I think could be beneficial for players and overall gameplay. So the question is, what makes Fortnite Battle Royale so fun and what could make it even better?
This Ain’t Your Grand Pappy’s Shooter: Everything We Love About Fortnite
Right away you can tell that Fortnite isn’t your typical shooter. In Fortnite Battle Royale you collect things like, wood, brick, and steel so that you can build structures to defend yourself from the 99 competing players on the map.But what really sets it apart from other competitive games is the gratification you get from taking down other players.
In Call Of Duty, a single kill might leave you feeling like a dummy. And if it doesn’t, I’m sure your teammates will be there to remind you. However, Fortnite isn’t about kills, it’s about survival. The gratification you get from each kill in Fortnite is amplified by the intense and competitive nature of last-man-standing gameplay. This is because in order to kill your opponent, you have to outsmart them. Choosing the right materials, building strategically and finding the right weapons are the difference between life or death in Fortnite. Or you know… dancing.
When you decide to engage someone in Fortnite Battle Royale, it’s always a calculated risk. There is no fight you are guaranteed to win (which can be so damn frustrating). You’re trying to outlive 99 other people and even getting past the first few minutes feels like an accomplishment. You always have to think, do I have the right gun for this situation? Do I have enough bullets? Do I have the material to build a structure if they start shooting back? Can I sneak up on them? When you do overcome your opponent, it’s satisfying because you feel like the better player. That’s one of the many reasons we play games, for competition and winning feels good. If you manage to pull it off and win the entire match, the feeling of accomplishment is even better.
A big part of Fortnite Battle Royale is also based on luck which makes each time you play different and interesting. The game randomizes where to find guns, medkits, chests and the rarity of weapons. You could start at the same place on the map 10 times in a row and never find the same type of guns or other provisions. This means you have to change up your strategy every time you play which keeps you on your toes. The eye of the storm is also another factor that really switches up gameplay. Depending on where you land and where the circle starts to close in, the type of game you play can greatly vary. You could land within the circle and get lucky enough to not have to run across the map or you could land on the other side of the world and the circle could spawn opposite of you, forcing you to run great lengths. It’s all these small aspects that can really change up gameplay and keep players on their toes and one of the reasons Fortnite is so replayable.
However, no game is perfect and there is always room for improvement and more content. This is an early access game after all. Here are some things that devs could implement so that the game stays fresh for players.
All I Want For Christmas Is These 3 Things In Fortnite
Vehicles. I’ve seen a lot of talk about vehicles in Fortnite, especially in comparison to PUBG. Vehicles could work in the sense that they aren’t like legendary weapons and are impossible to find, but they aren’t everywhere so that you can always get your hands on one. They would make it so you could go greater distances even faster, but like every other decision in Fortnite Battle Royale, there should be a risk also. Yes they would go fast and help you get around, but they could also be incredibly loud and let anyone within a large area know where you are. They could also make it so the vehicles could be rigged so when choosing whether or not you want to jump on one, maybe you second guess. Something like, when you start the engine, it explodes thus killing you. It could make for some interesting gameplay.
New items. There are many new items that could really switch up gameplay. New weapons are definitely possible. Maybe add in a flamethrower that doesn’t reach very far but is deadly when used in close quarters and can burn down buildings fast. This could mean opponents could burn down bases in the late game, giving people more of a chance when faced against the 10 story fortress that some people build when it’s down to the last 20 people. Weapon attachments could become a thing, adding things like scopes, bump-stocks for reduced recoil or even flashbangs that blind enemies for a few seconds.
A new map. This one is definitely the most important in my opinion. Yes, the dogfights I’ve had in Tilted Towers and Dusty Depot will forever be in my heart, but something new and exciting would definitely keep things fresh. Granted, the current map is very big and I’m sure there are places I still haven’t even been but there could be a lot of cool things when it comes to a new map design. Like a certain theme or different terrain.
Fortnite Battle Royale is a game best played with your friends as you build, shoot and outsmart your way to victory. There are many things that are great about it and I’ve made some fun gaming memories while playing it. If you have any fun memories playing this game, or if you agree or disagree with what said, let me know down in the comments below!
