I’m extremely late to the VR party but I finally got to try it this weekend and wow, was I impressed! I can’t exactly remember the games I played but one involved piloting your own spaceship Han Solo style and the other was shooting waves of robots in the most badass of ways. Y’know the saying about being as happy as a kid on Christmas morning? Well I literally felt like that. I couldn’t contain my smile or my laughter, I was amazed and confused and I was having so much fun. I thought about it for the rest of the night and eventually my thoughts turned to what could be. What sort of games should be turned into a VR experience? These are some of my ideas and I know that most of you will agree with me.
All my life, I have just wanted to know what it felt like to do one Kamehameha. I just want to feel the epicness, the power and splendour that would come with shooting that blue energy beam out of my hands. Yes, I know VR won’t exactly give me these feelings, but it’s the closest I’ll probably ever get in my lifetime. But imagine a Dragon Ball VR game where you get to fly around, throw punches, block, and use Ki beams? You could get some really fast paced fighting action that could be a good workout and a love letter to fans who dream of being one of the Z fighters. It would be cool to see how they work in all the different fighters’ technics like putting the controller to your head to do Piccolo’s special beam cannon, or raising your hands above your head to do Goku’s spirit bomb. I’m sure fans would love to relive the big fights from the anime like Goku VS Vegeta or Gohan VS Cell, or maybe even just a multiplayer mode where you can fight other players from around the world in a martial arts style tournament.
Now, as I’m sure many people know, there is already a Mario Kart VR game named Mario Kart GP VR, but you cannot buy the game yourself. The game was made by Bandai Namco and was only available in Japan and the United Kingdom in arcades and special events. You also only get to play the game with 4 friends and only get a choice between 4 characters, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad. Imagine playing with all your friends online in a 12 player all out race of throwing bom-ombs, blue shells and bananas.
There is just one big problem, Nintendo has never done VR before and the Switch doesn’t have VR capabilities. I’ve seen accessories that put the Switch in a headset device that is like a VR headset, but it doesn’t act like a real VR device. Maybe this will be something Nintendo considers in the future, instead of something like Labo but God knows Nintendo likes to be that weird uncle at Thanksgiving.
The Lord of the Rings
My favourite movies of all time deserve to have better games and I know that there could also be a kickass VR experience within the Tolkien universe. My favourite film/book from the trilogy is without a doubt The Two Towers for one reason, the battle for Helm‘s Deep (it took place on my birthday). Imagine a survival, wave based VR game where you have to defend Helm’s Deep from waves of Uruk-Hai. There are different rounds where the better you are at defending, the more points you get and the longer you hold out for, and you go through different aspects of the fight. First you’re on the wall, using a bow and arrow or taking down ladders and enemies that come at you. Then you get to the part where the bomb breaks open the Deeping Wall and the men of Rohan have to fight off the hordes until they retreat, and then finally you move to the part where Aragorn and Gimli defend the gate before it is broken through (or in the novels where Gimli and Eomer defend the entrance to the Glittering Caves). It would be really cool if you get a choice in who you play as, Aragorn, Legolas, or Gimli, and they have different play styles like Legolas using his bow and dual wielding swords, Gimli being stronger and having better defence while having to two-hand his axe, and Aragorn is just the basic character. Just talking about this is making me happy and hopeful. I GIVE YOU FULL PERMISSION TO TAKE MY IDEA AND MAKE IT.
Do I even need to explain why this would be a cool idea? Lightsaber battles, blaster dogfights, and piloting spaceships. Hell, even using the force to move shit would be incredibly cool. I really don’t think I need to get into the details about why this would be fun for hours. I just want to use this chance to rant about EA and how they don’t deserve the Star Wars license. Video games are much harder to make now-a-days but EA has just dropped the ball on Star Wars games. They really don’t understand what fans want and are clearly just interested in money. Every other Star Wars games in the last decade has been cancelled or is in development hell and everyone knows that people aren’t happy with Battlefront. A licenced Star Wars VR game could have the potential to be a masterpiece!
VR is clearly going to be a big part of the future of gaming and as more developers become more well versed in its mechanics, things are only going to get better and better. Hopefully we start seeing some great licensed games like the ones I mentioned above. Let me know if you want any other franchises to get the VR treatment. It was pretty fun making this list and I can’t wait to play more cool games in virtual reality.
