If there is one thing the Switch is becoming known for, it is without a doubt how many ports the console gets. In my opinion, I really don’t mind. A lot of games that I have never played before are getting a second chance and thus I’m willing to try them for the first time. The added incentive of playing them in handheld mode, no matter where you are, will make me double dip on quite a few games. It seems more companies are jumping on the Switch train, due to so many games having massive success, and some games even selling better than when they launched. As we are still in the second year of the Switch’s life, it seems support is growing and some bigger developers will start putting their games on the Switch. There is one game however, that interests me, and I know interests many other people, especially considering is the biggest game in the world. Grand Theft Auto 5.
In my mind, it’s not a question of IF it will happen, but WHEN. I do think Grand Theft Auto 5 on the Switch is inevitable due to it being the only console that doesn’t have the hit game. If there is one thing everyone always hears about Grand Theft Auto 5, is that it is still selling extremely well, even years after its release. It’s still on most top 10 best sellers list for monthly sales. But think of how much more it could sell on the Switch! Possibly even a few more million copies, due to the huge player base already and the possibility to play it wherever, whenever! The Switch isn’t a typical Nintendo console that is full of games geared towards a more family friendly audience. It has games like Doom, Wolfenstein, and Skyrim, so maybe running over prostitutes and torturing people won’t be a deal breaker.
The biggest question is if the Switch can actually handle the game and run it. Grand Theft Auto 5 is over 5 years old and the Switch is the first console of the newest console generation so I think it would handle it fine; possibly without even a downscale in graphics or framerate. Perhaps they could forgo including the online mode, since Nintendo doesn’t always have the best track record with online play. I know the online mode is probably more popular and profitable than the story mode and free play, but I’m just trying to make this dream seem realistic.
Considering Rockstar has already stated that L.A Noire has sold very well on the Switch, there is no way they haven’t at least considered putting Grand Theft Auto 5 on the Switch. Take Two CEO Straus Zelnick has even suggested that more games would be coming to the Switch platform. Now of course they have many other games they could port (please also port Red Dead Redemption), but I don’t think anyone would deny that GTA on the Switch would be a console seller. So yes, I’m positive Rockstar has thought about this port, and who knows, they might already be working on it.
Another factor to consider is Nintendo and their stinginess when it comes to their image. Like I mentioned earlier, the Switch does have a lot of adult titles, but Grand Theft Auto 5 (and the series as a whole) comes with a lot of controversy. Every worried parent knows about Grand Theft Auto and how violent it is and maybe parents would think twice about getting their young kids a Nintendo console for their birthday. Obviously this sounds ridiculous but hey, parents and the media always stretch things when it comes to video games. Nintendo is also incredibly protective of their brand, doing things like shutting down fan projects, emulator websites, and being very aware and careful about how their games and characters are portrayed. They are becoming more lax and the company is definitely changing due to new leadership and past failures, so anything is possible. You’ve gotta be optimistic, ladies and gentlemen.
Do you think Grand Theft Auto 5 on the Switch is possible? Tell me why or why not, I’d love to discuss. Maybe I’m just looking on the more glass half full side of things.
