Ports are always a complicated matter. Whenever there is a new generation of consoles, people are always complaining about ports while simultaneously begging for them. There are games that fans always beg to be ported, like Resident Evil 4, Shovel Knight, Skyrim, and Final Fantasy 7. Nintendo on the other hand, is ripe of people asking for ports that they usually do not get. Enter the Legend of Zelda. It’s Nintendo’s second most popular franchise, but is probably the only Nintendo franchise that constantly gets ports. Almost every game has been ported or been on some version of Virtual Console but it hasn’t always been in the way people want. Yes, the 3DS ports of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask are great games, but people were upset that they were console games put onto a weaker handheld compared to a stronger home console. Twilight Princess HD was put onto a dying console that many people really disliked due to the awful gamepad. I won’t knock Wind Waker HD because it was put on the Wii U a lot earlier and is quite the good game. The only 3D Zelda yet to be ported is Skyward Sword but in my opinion, no amount of better graphics will fix the un-fun gameplay. But I’m not here to rant about that, I’m here to talk about The Hero of Time HD Collection that has been making the rounds on the internet.
The other day I saw a tweet talking about this HD remake port of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask that would be on the Nintendo Switch and I thought, “Wow I want this badly. Why hasn’t it happened yet?” There are many games that can be ported that could make easy money and can be done by smaller, lesser known developers. This gives the big wigs at Nintendo like Miyamoto, or Aonuma, time to focus on new games. So why isn’t this happening? Well, I’m sure that Nintendo is working on at least a couple of Zelda games at the moment and one of them is definitely the next 3D Zelda, the follow up to Breath of the Wild. Why not let Grezzo, the developers behind a lot of the Zelda ports, do the Hero of Time HD Collection? Now I don’t have an executive position at Nintendo but they probably don’t want to be known for milking games by just porting them every console generation. There is literally a meme about Skyrim getting constantly ported, and even Bethesda is in on the joke. Obviously Nintendo could make a lot of money from it, but they care too much about public opinion about themselves.
What exactly are the chances of this happening? Pretty slim as of this moment. It could possibly happen near the end of the Switch life cycle, or maybe even sooner if fans are really outspoken about it. Fans have a lot of power when it comes to games being made. Look at the Spyro-trilogy, fans begged for that and eventually the developers had to make it due to such popular demand. Breath of the Wild is one of the biggest, most popular Zelda games ever, and Nintendo is going to have their hands full with trying to make a worthy successor, but remakes usually funds new and big ideas so it could be worth it. Depending on whether or not Nintendo uses the same assets for their Breath of the Wild sequel, I could see it coming out in the next year or two considering they have already confirmed that they are working on it. I’d even say that a Twilight Princess HD port might be more likely, due to it coming out at the tail end of the Wii U. But I, like everyone else, would love a Hero of Time HD collection.
Yes I realize I’m not bringing much hope to this rumour or desire, but I just want to be realistic. It could happen, it honestly could, but maybe not for a while. But to be fair, Ocarina and Majora 3D are still widely available and pretty cheap. They may be handhelds but that doesn’t mean they are any less valuable. Until then, we can all pray to the goddess Hylia for the Hero of Time HD Collection
