I was expecting a lot from Xbox at Gamescom 2018, and they did not disappoint. No, I didn’t get the games I had hoped for, but we still got a lot of content. I will only be hitting on some of the major topics. Let’s break it down, shall we?
First up we have Hunt: Showdown which is Crytek’s monster hunting FPS. Players will explore a 1km square map that changes in size as you track down your beastly target. You’re not alone in these swamps; some players will be hunting the same creature as you. Some players may just wait for you to do the dirty work and then take you out as soon as you head for extraction. You will be able to equip different gear as you explore the monster-infested bayou. Hunt: Showdown will be available in early access through Xbox’s games preview function.
Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds
Speaking of game previews let’s talk about PUBG. The former king of battle royale games is finally getting its full product release. Starting September 4th PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will release its 1.0 version of the title it took 18 patches to get to this point and the team has no plans of stopping post-launch. Upon release players will gain access to the Sanhok map along with the addition of custom matches and War Mode. Along with the full product launch, a PUBG special edition controller is now available for pre-order. The signature blue circle around the left analog stick is a great contrast to the grey camo controller and a cool shout out to Bluehole, owners of the PUBG Corp. A set of crosshairs surround the right thumbstick and the PUBG is logo etched into the battery cover. All of this and the fact that the right trigger is marked with a red X make for a surprisingly stylish looking controller.
This next game may be one of my most anticipated games of this year. Dice had a lot to say about Battlefield V’s new Tides of war mode. For starters, you will be able to build and customize your squad as well as personalize each soldier’s looks and weapons. You will also be able to customize your vehicles as well. We will also see the addition of Combat role. The Recon class will be able to specialize in long-range shooting, spotting enemies, or stealth. It appears that the assault class will have a wider range of weapon’s, making them more versatile in a firefight. Medics have been given even more ways to keep teammates alive; I can only hope that people actually use them. The Support class can now provide fortifications such as sandbags which can be used for cover or make it easier to set up a bipod and cover his retreating allies.
Over time we will gain access to more combat roles. As you progress you will unlock a sort of skill tree for your weapons and vehicles so you can further customize the way you play. As you complete orders or take on special assignments you can unlock new gear and weapons for your company. Battlefield V will have 2 console bundles. Both the Xbox one X and Xbox One S consoles will have 1 terabyte hard drives 1-month of Xbox Game Pass and 2 weeks of Xbox Live Gold. Battlefield V will also receive a 3rd bundle console known as “The Gold Rush” special edition. This console sports a unique dark grey/ gold design color scheme and a special matching grey controller. The gold rush edition will include codes for Battlefield V and Battlefield 1943; as well as of 1-month game pass, 14-day Xbox Live trial and 1-month of EA access. Battlefield V will release on October 11th for Ea access members, October 16th for those who purchased the deluxe edition and October 19th for the standard edition.
Devil May Cry 5
Devil May Cry 5 looks to be returning to its roots of intense hack and slash gameplay. I for one have always enjoyed the Devil May Cry series, with Devil May Cry 4 being the exception. I will still be willing to give this installment a chance. There’s only one major detail I’d like to address about the DMC 5 trailer. Dante turned his motorcycle into some badass melee weapons, killed some demons, and THEN TURNED IT BACK INTO A MOTORCYCLE. That’s absolutely bonkers.
The game that impressed me the most was Sable. The minimalist art style combined with the music by Japanese Breakfast left me speechless. It was an early Zelda feel to it. I will be looking forward to this title in late 2019.
Xbox Game Pass
Xbox Game Pass had a few big announcements. The biggest announcement is probably the fact that the Master Chief Collection (MCC) is finally being added to Xbox Game Pass on September 1st. This will also bring about custom games for the MCC. The second big announcement is without a doubt the beta release of the Game Pass app. This app will allow you to access and manage your Game Pass library. The app is currently available to everyone on the android play store with amount number of openings for IOS users. IOS users go to aka.ms/gamepassios to submit an application. If you haven’t tried Game Pass now then now’s your chance; right now new users can get 2 months of Game Pass for $2.00.
The Zombie survival titan Day Z is finally making its way to consoles on August 29th through the Xbox game preview service This hardcore survival simulation is not for the faint of heart. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of a real-world Czech city. The moral dilemmas you face in Day Z unique to you. Resources are rare so you will have to fight for every second of survival.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks to be sticking with the style of gameplay they’ve perfected over the last 2 games. The tombs in this addition to the series will be the biggest and most dangerous ones yet. The phrase that was repeated the most during this interview was “Everything is trying to kill you” which was quickly proven when we see Lara descend into an underground tomb. The game world in this installment seems to be the biggest and most detailed yet. I feel like the main goal of this addition to the series is to make the player truly feel like they are in Lara Croft’s boots; you should constantly feel like you are being challenged so when you finally complete a tomb you feel that sense of accomplishment. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be getting a console bundle. This bundle like the others will include a 1 terabyte hard drive a copy of the game, 1-month of Game Pass, and a 14-day Xbox Live Gold trial.
Forza Horizon 4
Forza Horizon 4 will be taking us to beautiful U.K. countryside where we found out that the seasons will be a factor during gameplay. The new online mode is called Team Adventure. You will now be able to race as a team; meaning that you don’t have to come in first place every time. If you’re not the best racer then you can hang out in the middle of the pack and run interference to allow your teammates the opportunity to pull ahead. A new Quick Chat feature has been added to make communicating with other drivers easier. Or you can always play by yourself offline. Forza Horizon 4 will also be getting an Xbox one S bundle which will also include a copy of Forza Horizon 4, a 1 terabyte,1-month of Game Pass and a 2 week Xbox Live Gold trial. It will also receive an Xbox One X bundle which in addition to everything else will also include a copy of Forza Motorsport 7. I can hardly wait for the October 2nd release date.
State of Decay 2
State of Decay 2 will be receiving the Daybreak Pack on September 12th which will include a whole new game mode. You play as a red talon soldier whose objective is to protect a Red Talon technician against increasingly difficult waves of zombies. Daybreak mode will not use your community so there is no risk of losing any of your survivors. This paid DLC will also include, 9 new ranged weapons, 6 new melee weapons, and 6 new consumables. It will also introduce us to a new freak. Zombie, Blood Plague Juggernaut. The 7 waves of zombies should take around 45 mins to complete. The more waves you complete the more “Prestige” you will earn. Prestige is the in-game currency which can be used to unlock Red Talon assistance for your community, including recruiting a Red Talon Soldier into your community Like the main game mode Daybreak mode will also support drop in drop out 4 player co-op If you want to try your luck solo then you can take 2 NPCs with you.
Sea of Thieves
It seems like the Sea of Thieves team is really listening to its fan community. The upcoming release of the Forsaken Shores is just more evidence of this fact. Pirates will sail to the Devils Roar a volcanic land filled with news treasure and dangers. The volcanoes are not constantly erupting but that doesn’t mean you are safe from danger. Trimmers will signify a coming eruption. If you insist on traveling to this Hellscape then I suggest taking a rowboat with you so you don’t have to swim through boiling water. We will also be getting new Merchant missions in the way of cargo runs; taking items from one spot to another. Sea Of Thieves is also still available on Xbox Game Pass.
This was just the first day of Xbox at Gamescom 2018. I hope we at least a few more exclusive announcements. I most excited to finally play Forza Horizon 4, and Sable. I’m excited to see everything else that is announced this week. Let us know what you’re looking forward in the comments.
