The Monster Hunter film that was announced back in 2016 is going to go into the production stage in September. According to Variety, it will star Mila Jovovich and Paul W. S. Anderson will be directing. It will be filmed in South Africa and the budget will be around 60 million dollars. It will be a standalone movie but there have been hints of a bigger franchise.
Monster Hunter has really grown in the past few months, due to the popularity of Monster Hunter World for the Xbox One and PS4. The game has shipped over 7.5 million copies and is set to release on PC later this year so I’m sure the game will sell a few million copies. The rise in popularity is probably why the decision to make a movie out of the franchise was made.
As many know, video game movie adaptions are known for not being very well or making a lot of money. Also, out of all the video games to adapt, Monster Hunter seems like a strange choice. There doesn’t seem to be much of a story within the series but who knows, maybe that will be a good thing. Then fans won’t get mad because there is no indepth story to follow. The name “Monster Hunter” also seems a bit dorky for a movie title but I suppose there has been worse. Marketing for this film needs to be good or it’s just going to fall into the bad video game adaption category.
It is nice that the lead in the film will be a woman, and it’s quite funny that it will be Mila Jovovich considering she has already done the Resident Evil Franchise. Maybe her thing will be video game adaptions. But hopefully that legacy isn’t BAD video game adaptions. She’s not a bad actress at all but I’m optimistic.
