Being the first video games I ever played, the first generation of Pokemon games are very special to me. I remember catching my first Pidgey, seeing my favourite Pokemon, Poliwhirl, for the first time, and beating the game for the first time. Although I haven’t played many of the Pokemon games, I do replay the first generation every couple of years because of my nostalgia for it. Sadly, with the release of Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu & Eevee , I am unable to buy the beautiful remaster of the games I so fondly remember. Going on social media and seeing everyone talking about their journey to catch em’ all is fun to watch, but is inducing a lot of jealousy within me. So to distract myself from not being able to play Pokemon. . . I’ll be talking about Pokemon!
From what it seems like, Pokemon Let’s Go has been selling like hotcakes as everyone seems to be playing it. Game Freak has insisted that this is not an entry in the core Pokemon series, but merely a spin-off to bring in new fans who played Pokemon Go. Whether that will happen or not has yet to be seen, but due to the stellar sales the game has, I wonder if the game mechanics of Let’s Go will be used again? What I mean in this sense is if Pokemon Silver & Gold will get the Let’s Go treatment.
Although my nostalgia for the first generation of Pokemon is strong, I will always admit that the second generation of Pokemon is better. It had 100 new Pokemon, a day and night cycle, a lot of new mechanics, AND YOU COULD GO BACK TO KANTO. It was and is a fantastic set of games and I really hope that they do get the Let’s Go treatment. But is it likely?
I think it is pretty likely. Game Freak is always ready to make spin-off titles and they usually take off and become their own franchise. Plus they always like to have games to not make the gap between mainline Pokemon games seems so long. Game Freak has stated that the 8th generation of Pokemon is coming out in 2019, and other than the new RPG they’re working on, Town, we have no idea what the future holds. A Let’s Go version of Silver & Gold would be very easy to make. Yes, they have to remake the game to be in 3D, but they don’t have to make new Pokemon, don’t have to make a new story, they already have Kanto remade in that engine, and it’s clearly a big hit even though it’s not a core game. The only problem I can foresee is people freaking out, thinking that this is the way they are making core Pokemon. But if Game Freak let people know that this is indeed only a spin off franchise, and that they are still making regular core games, I think everything will be okay.
I’m sure it will be a while before we hear any news of such a game, but I do think it will happen. Pokemon Gold & Silver are both fantastic games and even better Pokemon games. Sure, the Let’s Go spin-offs may be a bit toned down from the regular core series, but it still looks very fun, so I’m optimistic for the future!
