The first time I was ever truly afraid while playing a video game was in the year 1999. The game that scared me so badly I had nightmares for months after playing was none other than Resident Evil 2; that was one of the main reasons it’s still one of my favorite games of all time. The overall setting of this game has yet to be matched by any other survival horror game. When I first heard about a remake I was sure that I would be able to muster up the courage and play through it without getting scared. All I played was a 30-minute demo and if I’m being entirely honest … I was wrong.
In the demo, you take on the role of Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie police officer whose first week on the job happens to coincide with a zombie outbreak. You have 30-minutes to complete a very small portion of the game. The 30-minute segment doesn’t spoil any story details and only adds to the suspense of the game. I spent the majority of this time just admiring the work that Capcom put into what is clearly a labor of love. Capcom did a wonderful job of giving me a perfect mix of nostalgia (fear), yet still giving me enough to make it feel like a whole new (terrifying) experience.
I can say without a doubt this is the best “remaster” I’ve played. Resident Evil 2 is now my most anticipated game of the month; possibly of the year. This 30 minute 1 shot was one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had in months. Thank you Capcom, I look forward to playing the full game in a few short weeks. Stay tuned for our review of the full game.
