Even though the Nintendo Direct has sadly been delayed due to the earthquake that has happened in Japan, we are still getting a Direct in the near future. We here at Game Savvy are hoping that the aftermath of the earthquake goes smoothly and we are sending positive vibes their way. We do have a bit more time for speculation, so that’s exactly what we are going to do.
The Direct is going to be about 35 minutes long, and will focus on both the Nintendo Switch and 3DS, but they haven’t specified if they are going to talk about games that come out in 2019. So we definitely have a lot to cover in just a short 35 minutes, but just like regular Nintendo shenanigans, there is a lot that is up in the air, Especially considering how many games they have announced, but have given no definitive release date for.
The first thing is something that, as of today, we basically know for sure is going to be in the Direct, and that’s Yoshi. Today on Nintendo’s website, they officially changed the title for the previous untitled Yoshi game to Yoshi’s Crafted World. One can assume that someone changed the name on the website by accident, due to a scheduled change that should have come after the Direct. But due to this, we can be fairly sure that Yoshi will be in the direct and I’m pretty excited to see more of this game because it’s been a while since Iève played a new Yoshi game, and I like the fact that it’s co-op..
I’m going to say this a lot, but depending on if we are talking about games well into 2019, we might see the following game during the Direct. Fire Emblem Three Houses was announced over a year ago, but we didn’t hear anything about it until E3 of this year. We saw a bit of gameplay and they gave a window of Spring 2019 for the release date. As a huge Fire Emblem fan myself, it would be great to see how different this game is from the others in the series.
The Switch Online Service is just weeks away from debuting and it still feels like we don’t know everything about what it has to offer. There are 10 NES games that they still haven’t announced and it feels like there are other things they are keeping under wraps. Classic Nintendo would mean they unveil something that no one would expect like a special game you can only get with the service, or SNES games as well as NES. Who knows? Not me, but honestly it’s a given that they speak about the online service since it does come out soon.
I would be absolutely flabbergasted if we didn’t see anything from Smash, considering it is the biggest game of the year. I don’t think it will get a lot of screen time but I think we will get a character reveal and maybe an echo fighter as well. I still think that Skull Kid or Issac from Golden Sun have the best chance of being in the game, but I think we will only get one reveal during this Direct. As for echo fighters, in my opinion, it’s really up in the air. I often hear people saying Shadow the Hedgehog or Isabel from Animal Crossing but I just don’t know about either of them. Shadow could really work, but I don’t know if they will do another 3rd party character that gets an echo. But hey, its Nintendo. I feel like Isabel warrants a whole new character and move list. I’ll give away my pre order of Smash if it is not in the Direct, that’s how sure I am.
I’ll talk about the next two games together because they’re kind of in the same boat. These are Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta. Both have only briefly been teased, literally the smallest amount has been teased, and fans are eager for much more. The thing is though, the games seem to be in very early development (well, as far as I know). They were both teased about 2 years ago and as for Metroid, it seemed like they literally just thought about making it and then they shoved it in their E3 presentation. They could be shown, or maybe only one of them will be, but it still feels like and odd time to be put on display.
Although we have already seen a lot of it, I feel like we will be seeing a bit of Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee. I honestly don’t really know why more of it needs to be shown other than making people not forget about it, but I’m sure the game is going to sell millions. We have seen the improved graphics, battle system, accessories, and much more, so what else is there to see? I really don’t think more needs to be shown, but Nintendo wants to make sure it’s a heavy hitter for the holidays.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Luigi’s Mansion remake for 3DS would get a mention during the Direct. The game comes out on October 19th, so it’s about a month away. Even though it seems like a bit of a throwaway game on the 3DS, obviously Nintendo wants the game to sell well. Maybe they will talk about a new feature the game will have, just so they can give it a mention before the release.
It’s pretty much been confirmed that Bowser’s Inside Story is getting an HD remake for the 3DS. It’s possible the most loved game in the Mario & Luigi franchise. The 3DS is without a doubt slowing down production of games. It seems like there are only going to be a few medium sized releases like Warioware and Luigi’s Mansion to still keep the handheld alive. Nintendo says they’re going to keep producing games for it well into 2019 so I’m sure we will get at least 1 surprise 3DS announcement.
There have been lots of rumours going around about New Super Mario Bros U being ported to the Switch and it seems pretty inevitable. Although I personally think 3D world should be the game getting ported, I do think NSMBU is a great game. It could be a great game to fill in the November gap, or even early 2019. Of course there are always fake rumours but this seems pretty legit at the moment so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we see it during this Direct.
Animal Crossing is the real oddball here. I do think that it will come out next year, but will it be a big early year game, or a Christmas/holiday title? If it comes out early, then we could without a doubt be seeing it during this Direct. But is that enough time to get people hyped if it comes out early next year? This is honestly what I love about Directs and predictions. There is so much to consider and factor when thinking about each game and franchise.
It seems a new trend with Nintendo is releasing games either right after the Direct, or the day after and it’s quite a nice surprise. I have absolutely no idea what game would be releasing, but I do think that it will happen! I think originally it was going to be the Mega Man 11 demo, but that has already released due to the delay, so it looks like I originally would have been right.
In a surprise announcement this morning, it seems that Sid Mier’s Civilization 6 is coming to the Nintendo Switch as an exclusive. The game is only on PC so it’s pretty wild that it’s also coming to Switch and for me, it will be a day one buy. The Switch is becoming a great console for strategy and tactical games. It’s obvious that it was supposed to be revealed during the direct but the developers decided to announce it anyway. It’s a shame these games are being announced when it would have gotten more hype during the Direct
Of course I’m going to miss things, be wrong, or maybe even get a few things right, but I’m not going to go through every franchise that Nintendo has to offer because it would be a waste of both of our time. I’m just talking about what I think has a chance, and what I see a lot of people talking about when it comes to every Direct (like everyone screaming about Animal Crossing). I hope the Direct is soon and I hope everyone gets what they want for Christmas, just please be realistic with your expectations.
