Smash Ultimate is gearing up to be one of the biggest titles of the year, let alone one of the greatest fighting games of all time. Since we learned of its existence many Nintendo Directs ago, there have been countless reveals and surprises and maybe just a few tears shed (mostly by Waluigi fans). With just over one month to go, Nintendo has announced they are doing yet another Smash Nintendo Direct this Thursday, November 1st and ladies and gentlemen, it’s going to be epic. With a run time of roughly 40 minutes, and the one and only, the god himself, Sakurai hosting the Direct, many people feel that everything will be laid out on the table for release. All the character reveals, the mysterious mode unveiled, and more details about online, can you tell I’m hyped up?! What are the chances it’s actually just 40 minutes of Sakurai talking about a new Smash Run mode? I know you’re here for one thing though, and that’s the character reveals. I never understood why people say that Avengers Infinity War is the greatest crossover in history, I mean, most of them are friends and again, most of them live in New York, so is it really that ambitious? Smash has characters from multiple video game franchises. What if you told a kid in the early 90’s that one day, Mario, Sonic, Snake, Simon Belmont, Pac-Man, Cloud, and Ryu would all be in the same fighting game? Think about that, people. As we have gotten closer to the release, Sakurai has stated not to expect too many fighters, but he also said not to expect many new ones to begin with, and here we are with several, so obviously there are going to be some character reveals on Thursday, and these are the characters I think are going to get in.
“The Grinch Leak”, as many people are calling it in the Smash community, revealed some information that was leaked with images of characters like Banjo Kazooie, Ken, Shadow, Chorus Kid, Mach Bike Rider, Isaac, and Geno. Now, I’m not saying that this leak is fake, I think it’s just partially fake. 7 characters just seems like a lot, but I do think some of these characters have made it. Over the past few months, I’ve been a huge Debbie downer about Banjo Kazooie not being in Smash, it just didn’t seem possible. I mean, a character who didn’t originate in a Japanese game plus the license is owned by Microsoft? That seemed impossible, and it still does, but if anyone can do it, it’s Nintendo. It’s no secret that Nintendo and Microsoft have had some sort of business talks in the past year, since they capitalized on Sony being unwilling to do cross play when it came to Fortnite. I’m sure the idea of putting Banjo in Smash has been on Sakurai’s mind for a while, and acquiring the license for him could have been what started the friendly talks with Microsoft to begin with. Any Banjo Kazooie fan knows that Rare, the developers behind Banjo, were once a 3rd party developer that made games for Nintendo, until they were bought out by Microsoft. This shows that that maybe Rare still holds Nintendo in good faith (but just as equally, Nintendo could be sour towards them for jumping ship and going over to Microsoft island). It’s a leap of faith, I know people, but the leaks look promising, and there are many smaller reasons that Banjo is just such a good fit. His art style works well with Smash, his move list wouldn’t be that hard to make, and if he is a dual character, like Ice Climbers or Rosalina & Luma, than Sakurai will make it happen. We will find out soon whether I’m right or not.
Although this article is already a bit different from my last Smash prediction, this character has been on both. And this man is Isaac from Golden Sun. It’s a damn shame that he hasn’t been announced already, but hopefully all the Issac fans with have their wishes come true. Issac was another character that was in the recent leak, but there are many other reasons. Sakurai posted a photo on his personal twitter account of a few Smash characters squaring off against a rathalos from Monster Hunter, which is a confirmed boss in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. The photo is taken from an angel that looks a lot like a typical fight sequence from the Golden Sun which is easily noticed by any fan of the series. Why would Sakurai just do this for no reason? And even though Issac has been an assist trophy in the past, he wasn’t in the previous game, and hasn’t been shown as one for this game either. Right before the last Smash Direct, Nintendo also put out a trademark for Golden Sun, meaning it could be for Smash, or who knows, maybe even a new game, but you have to admit that the timing is pretty coincidental. Isaac, just like many other Smash characters, wields a sword, and it wouldn’t take a lot of creativity to come up with a move list, so he also has that going for him. The only reason I could think of for him not getting a spot in Smash, is the fact that there hasn’t been a Golden Sun game in many years, so Sakurai may not think he is relevant enough. But considering he scores pretty high on most Smash roster polls, I think even Sakurai has his eyes on him. The internet will break if this happens, as Nintendo and Microsoft fans will go hand in hand into the light that is Smash Bros.
It wouldn’t be a Smash Direct if we didn’t get some echo characters. Everyone seems to go crazy over echo characters, which is odd to me, because I thought everyone got mad whenever they revealed clone characters. Maybe it’s just because Sakurai and the creators just admit that they are clones and are basically the same character, I don’t know. I’m not going to spend as much time with these echo characters though, because I feel like there isn’t as big of a choice of characters for who could make it in. I think they are going to reveal 2 echo characters, and just like everyone else, I DO think it will be Shadow the Hedgehog, and Ken from Street Fighter. It just seems like the obvious choice, due to them basically being the clone characters in their respected franchises. It seems odd that if so, a lot of the echo characters would belong to third party franchises, but hey, it means more characters from a plethora of different games, which also means Smash’s audience could grow even bigger.
It’s less than one day until we know basically everything about this game, so there is a lot to be excited about ladies and gentlemen. Try and stay patient while we have just over a month until release. Goodbye, and good luck.
UPDATE – The Smash Direct is now over and I was almost completely wrong. The only thing I was right about was Ken being revealed. There were 3 reveals, which just so happend to be Ken, Incineroar from Pokemon Gen 7, and Pirranaha Plant from the Mario franchise. In my opinion, some better choices could have been made that would have made fans a lot happier, but nonetheless, It’s stil going to be a great game!
