EA showed off some new space combat and trailer from the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II and it looked intense.
The trailer starts off with the classic X Wing flying through the rubble of space towards and over and always terrifying Star Destroyer. It then cuts to Darth Vader taking on the rebels flying in his TIE Fighter. We see the Millenium Falcon makes an appearance Yoda and… DARTH MAUL!! EA noted that there will be hero vehicles from all three eras of Star Wars. I assume we can expect everything from the Millenium Flaco to Poe Dameron’s X-Wing.
The space battle trailer looks intense and something that players have been asking for for a little while. I’m a little skeptical because I’ve never been a fan of dog fighting in games. I’ve always found it difficult to keep my bearings as I played and motion sickness always sets in at some point. But, from the footage we get in the competitive play mode, I’m intrigued.
EA took the opportunity to show off a competitive match in the stars.
On one see we saw a player start off with their squad of rebels and an objective pops up to take down the Imperial defenses. On the other side, we saw an Imperial player who’s goal was to defend the defenses. It’s good to see objective oriented combat. Sometimes when it’s a simple slayer or direct PVP match, it becomes exclusive to just the skilled players, alienating the more casual player.
They introduced the TIE Bomber, a new Imperial ship that’s heavily armored and armed to the teeth. It’s apparently really great for taking down objectives and able to shoot multiple targets with multiple missiles. The way the TIE Bomber was playing, it did seem a little OP as it was seen shooting down multiple targets like they were paper people.
Next, we got a look at the A-Wing interceptor for the rebels. A fast and agile ship that packs a punch. And we also got a look at the Y-Wing which is the bomber class for the rebels.
As I said, my biggest problem with dog fighting is that I’ve never liked space flight in games. It’s always made me queasy and it’s also seemed difficult to navigate and keep your bearings. But the gameplay and mechanics looked smooth enough to get a pretty good handle on where you were at all times.
The best part of the match was showing off Darth Maul’s Scimitar, a stealth ship that can go invisible. They didn’t go into depth about how long but it looked really cool and fun to play.
Poe Dameron Black X-Wing made an appearance as well and it’s revealed that he has an AOE to help his friends which make sense because Poe is a natural leader.
We also got to see Boba Fett’s Slave 1, a bounty hunter ship with concussion missiles and seismic charges, as well as the Millenium Falcon which looks like an absolute beast. Definitely, a tank ship that can aggro and take a ton of damage while also doing a lot of damage on its own.
Absolutely great seeing these very famous ships that we get to use. Really makes the experiences desirable. It’s one thing to dog fight in a star wars game, it’s another to dog fight with your favorite heroes and villains. Creates an awesome experience that has me for the first time, interested in a star wars game.
