With Spider-Man releasing just over 2 weeks ago it begs the question, Who’s Next? Let’s elaborate on that a little first. What I’m asking is, what other superheroes should get a good video game in the same way as Spider-Man? Some of these heroes have had video games in the past, some of which were based on movies and that’s just not fair. I’ve selected 2 characters from the Marvel Universe and 2 from the DC Universe.
Our first hero is another New York resident, Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil. A game based on Daredevil would be difficult to pull off but if done properly it would be groundbreaking. Daredevil is blind so the biggest obstacle would be making the player rely on the other senses. The game would be split into sections, most of which would be played as Daredevil while smaller parts would be played as Matt Murdock attorney-at-law. While playing as Murdock, the game would be played in a first-person view to give the player some sense of being blind. You may have to use your heightened sense of hearing or smell to figure out if someone is telling you the truth or to pick-up on other clues. While in combat and in exploration modes the game would take a more third-person vantage point so the player would be able to see what’s going on around them. The player may be able to click in a thumbstick to create a noise that would bounce off your surroundings and give you a layout of your environment. The combat would be similar to Spider-Man with a simple combo and dodge system. This game could easily be tied into the already existing Spider-Man game, as the two heroes have worked together in the past.
Next up we have Frank Castle, The Punisher. This game would be played mostly from a third-person point of view, only going into first-person while aiming. This game wouldn’t have one specific playstyle, instead borrowing different aspects from different titles. The camera would stay relatively close to the player, similar to the 2013 Tomb Raider. As The Punisher the player would work their way through different crime families, eliminating the bosses; this would use a system comparable to Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis system. This game would also take place in an open-world style New York. Punisher has worked with and against both Spider-Man and Daredevil in the past; that would make this game a very easy tie for a connected universe.
First, up for DC is Oliver Queen, Green Arrow. Mr. Queen has more than enough humor and gadgets to support is own video game. The game could allow the player to level up different arrow types for unique play styles. Green Arrow is also an expert at hand-to-hand combat, for those situations when you’re too close to get a shot off. This game would begin on starfish island as you play through Green Arrow’s origin story, learning how to survive and create different tools you would eventually use against villains. The game would eventually move the story to Star City. Once in Star City, the player would work with allies such as Speedy and Black Canary to take down villains like Count Vertigo.
Last but certainly not least I give you John Constantine, The Hellblazer. This seemingly ageless warlock has a world filled with rich supernatural lore. He uses his wits and magical prowess to take down demons, devils, and all other manner of unnatural baddies. This game would give the player an RPG style of leveling for unique gameplay options. Maybe you want to be a little more magical in the way you take down those unholy monsters; perhaps you’re more of a religious type that would like to use holy scripture to take down foes. The game could be told in the beginning through flashbacks of past encounters while John is recounting his stories in the Ravenscar Psychiatric Hospital. Once the story was brought to the present the player would then be able to control Constantine throughout the world taking on jobs to get you closer to you inevitable showdown in Hell itself.
These are the characters I feel would make the best video games. Some of them I picked because I like the setting or backstory; others were simply because I liked the character or the world they operate in. Let us know what you think. Do you agree or disagree? What characters would you like to see in a video game?
