Virtual Reality for Business
2016 is the year of virtual reality and that means immersive new experiences. For a business like you, new technology means new opportunity. Immersive new video games mean you can create immersive experiences for you loyal audience. Here are my top 3 predictions of how businesses will be using virtual reality in the next couple of years. Please share your comments and ideas of how YOU think virtual reality will be changing business. Maybe you think it will change everything. Maybe you think it’ll be a sinker. Share you innovative ways to use virtual reality for business in the comments below.
- Virtual shopping
The beauty of online shopping is getting everything you need without leaving the house: but it’s still not end all be all. Items such as clothing and groceries still need bricks and mortar to try things on or determine ingredients. With virtual reality, e-commerce will hit a new level.
Imagine strapping on virtual reality set to find yourself at the front doors of Walmart. You walk the aisles, check out prices of the products. You place them in your cart and check out, with your items arriving at your house same day.
Imagine shopping through a clothing store and actually being able to see if items of clothing look good on your or even fit! It may take a little more than a simple headset to determine that but the point is the technology will be changing the way e-commerce happens for years to come. How do you think e-commerce and bricks and mortar brands can use virtual reality for business?
- Amazing immersive advertising
I like advertisements. I’m impressed that a brand would spend so much money to try to get me to buy their product. I like to be wooed and courted through advertising. I’m always looking to be impressed and whoever impresses me the most gets my dollars. With virtual reality, brands will begin coming up with incredible immersive content and will suck the dollars from your cold dead virtual body.
If you’re a business looking to sell an experience, there’s no better way of promoting it than making it a virtual experience. Give them a taste of your live concert through virtual reality. Give the audience a glimpse of what it’s like to go skydiving. Take them to a place where they crave more without giving them too much. That is the power of virtual reality.
- Game-based marketing
Game-based marketing is about using game mechanics that fit with your brand to make addictive and immersive experiences. With virtual reality, it’ll be as immersive as possible.
If your business is outdoor-adventure, one of the great addictive mechanics of your industry is exploration and discovery. Take that mechanic and create a virtual tour of an area you frequent, making sure that players discover some amazing things through clues or missions. Reward the players for the levels of difficulty in discovering new areas and items.
- Honorable mention: Training and simulation
Fastcodesign.com lists a number of Virtual Reality Ideas which includes training for surgeons. Surgeons would strap on GoPro’s to get first-hand videos of what they were looking at for the purpose of trainee’s. I can imagine there are a number of businesses, brands, and trades that could benefit internally from training through virtual reality.
I hope you enjoyed some of my ideas on virtual reality. The technology is certainly going to change some things in the coming years. Of course, all of these ideas are predicated on the thought that virtual reality becomes mainstream and that development on these platforms becomes more affordable.
