With the rise of YouTube, watching Let’s Plays has become a popular pastime of gamers. The reasons for this can vary, from the people behind the Let’s Plays(LP’s), to wanting to get past a certain boss. But just looking at the wide range of let’s plays and let’s players, there is certainly something for everyone.
For one, the people behind the let’s can add their own personal spin to it. The Super Gaming Brothers, a channel run by Juan “Johnny” Ortiz of SomeCallMeJohnny, Elliot Cancel of CreepyEllot and Matthew Metelli has over 110,000 subscribers because of the trio’s antics when playing games, from the regular games for the trio such as Far Cry 5 and Sonic Unleashed, to the downright WTF such as Huniepop and Hatoful Boyfriend.
However, for some streamers, it can be a window to show what games they are interested in, and a way to interact with other people. I asked up and coming Twitch streamer misstiffanyl, who specialises in JRPG’s, what has her favourite part of streaming was.
For me, it’s adding my commentary. I love saying what comes to mind regarding the cut scene or gameplay.
Plus, doing a live stream let’s play let me interact with viewers.
It can also be a good way for people to discuss games and give a platform to breakdown games better than a quick review can. Channels such as BrainScratch Commentaries provide an informative and entertaining breakdown of games such as Persona 5, Freedom Planet and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. They can also provide some useful advice for the watcher, who might be playing the game, and is looking for guidance in whatever game they might be playing.
This is probably the biggest reason why people start watching let’s players. It helps people relate to something they are going through at the moment, allowing the watcher to form a connection to something they are going through. Sorralam1 is someone notable for this, as his Kingdom Hearts guides have become very popular throughout the community.
Let’s playing a game can a lot of energy, but for the people that do it, there seems to be a lot of enjoyment in it. From interacting with viewers to just showing off skills, it can definitely be a fun time for all involved.
